In Unknown Case Iowa Family is Found Dead in Mexico

In a unknown case family of four members of an Iowa who traveled to Mexico for vacation were found dead there on Friday, the authorities said.

Kevin Sharp, 41, his wife, Amy, 38, and their children, Sterling, 12, and Adrianna, 7, were found in a condominium where they had been staying in Akumal, a small coastal town on the Yucatán Peninsula, a State Department official said.

The state prosecutor’s office of Quintana Roo, where Akumal is, said on Twitter that neither the bodies nor the room where they were found showed any sign of violence.

The Creston Police Department in Iowa, where the family members were reported missing around noon on Friday, would not comment on the cause of death, noting that it was awaiting the results of autopsies being performed in Mexico.

The Omaha World-Herald reported that Mark Williams, a dispatcher at the Union County Law Enforcement Center in Iowa, said Mexican officials were speculating about a gas leak, but that had not been confirmed.

In posts on social media, family members said the Sharps left the United States last week and had been expected to return on Wednesday. They also said that no foul play was suspected in the deaths.

Luis Avila, the president of the Adams County Fair and Racing Association in Corning, Iowa, said he had known Mr. Sharp, who was a stock car racer and a board member for the association, for about a decade. “He was a good family man,” he said.

“It isn’t going to be the same without him and the kids, the family,” Mr. Avila added. “It’s just a big shock.”
