The competition has taken on greater significance for the Gunners as the season has progressed and their routes to continental football begin to dwindle.

Indeed, with a top-four Premier League finish far from guaranteed, the Europa League is arguably Arsenal's best chance of ensuring their place in next season's Champions League.

Arsenal head to Sweden to face Ostersunds this week with Europa League glory looking the most likely route back into the Champions League for Arsene Wenger's men.

A damaging north London derby defeat against Tottenham on Saturday has seriously dented Arsenal's hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.

While the Gunners look set to miss out on the top four for the second season running, Wenger could follow the example Manchester United set last season and seek to lift the Europa League as a means of qualifying for Europe's elite club competition.

But there is still a long way to go for Arsenal as they enter the round of 32, with a two-legged tie against Swedish side Ostersunds standing between them and the last-16.

Team News

Ostersunds
Graham Potter will be without Hosam Aiesh and Johan Bertilsson. They will look to Iran international Saman Ghoddos and Iraq international Brwa Nouri for inspiration going forward.

Potential Ostersunds starting XI: Keita; Pettersson, Widgren, Bergvist, Mukiipi; Nouri, Hopcutt, Tekie, Sema, Islamovic; Ghoddos.

Arsenal
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ineligible to play due to the fact that his former club Borussia Dortmund have dropped into the competition from the Champions League. However, Henrikh Mkhitaryan is eligible to take part.

Alexandre Lacazette recently underwent a procedure on his knee and will be out of action for four-to-six weeks, while Santi Cazorla is a long-term absentee. Aaron Ramsey missed the Tottenham loss with a groin problem and is a major doubt for the tie.

Arsene Wenger has vowed to play a full-strength side as Arsenal target a place in the Europa League last 16, writes James Olley.

The Gunners boss is refusing to give up on a top-four finish in the Premier League despite Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham, which leaves them in sixth place and seven point adrift of their north London rivals with 11 games to play.

Wenger has played a weakened team in Europe's second tier competition this term, but will abandon that policy in Sweden this week as Arsenal do not have a weekend game after being knocked out of the FA Cup at Nottingham Forest.

Instead, they play the return leg at Emirates Stadium on Thursday week.

Wenger must contend with one enforced change as club-record £56million record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ineligible due to the possibility of Arsenal still being able to face his former club Borussia Dortmund in the knockout rounds.

That means Alexandre Lacazette is likely to be handed his first start since Aubameyang's arrival; the 26-year-old wasted an excellent late chance as a substitute at Wembley and Wenger suggested Lacazette, who only joined the club from Lyon last summer, is suffering as a result of the increased competition for places.

Potential Arsenal starting XI: Ospina; Mertesacker, Monreal, Mustafi, Bellerin; Xhaka, Elneny, Iwobi, Mkhitaryan, Ozil; Welbeck.

1ST HALF
Ostersunds 0-2 Arsenal

2ND HALF
